Israeli Violations of International Resolutions and the Genocide in Gaza: A Case Study

The study examines Israel’s actions and international support, particularly from the U.S., concerning the Gaza conflict and the events of October 7, 2023. It situates these actions within a historical trajectory since the establishment of Israel, from the perspective of international law as the primary legal framework governing international relations. The study hypothesizes that the international legal framework’s strength, based on key principles like the prohibition of territorial acquisition by force and the right to self-determination, is often weakened by conflicts with major powers’ interests, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the international system in ensuring compliance with international law. Hence, it is divided into two main sections. The first section analyzes Israeli actions as an occupying power, focusing on obligations under international humanitarian law, including the Hague Regulations of 1907 and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949. It discusses Israeli settlement policies in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, alongside the blockade of Gaza, highlighting violations of civilian rights and impediments to Palestinian self-determination. The second section examines the international aspect, particularly the United States’ role in providing diplomatic protection for Israel in the UN Security Council, which hinders the enforcement of international resolutions concerning the Palestinian issue. The study concludes that ongoing political and military support undermines the credibility of the international legal system, weakens international institutions’ ability to enforce international law, and threatens the principles of international justice and peace.
